A Sexless Internet Won’t Keep Us Safe
While the intention may be to create a safe online environment, the consequences are proving to be catastrophic.
In our current digital age, social media platforms hold immense power over the flow of information. They shape public discourse and influence societal norms to the point they have been accused of impacting mental health and even the results of recent elections.
One of the consequences of their power is the way we now have to talk about sex when we are online.
Nowadays, people have been forced to create terms such as “seggs,” use the corn emoji when they want to reference porn or talk about how they manage to make an income because they are a “spicy accountant.”
And now, in an effort to build safe spaces, many platforms have implemented blanket bans against sex, with the very predictable result of stifling conversations and artistic expression instead of providing guidance and curating healthy conversations around sex-related content.
