It was July 2022. The semester was ending, so I had a bit more free time at the school I worked at.
I was trying many different things: writing workshops, filmmaking programs, and, for some reason, I decided to get into an improv class. However, because I don't like to do things halfway, I wanted to get into a good one. Looking around, I found an Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) online workshop that was going to happen through Google Meet.
I looked at the program and liked what I saw. Plus, the fact that it was online gave me a lot of confidence because my computer screen would provide some distance to keep me safe.
Now, let’s recap a little here. I used to be a teacher. What business did I have taking an improv class? Believe it or not, this was not my first experience on the “stage.” Back in high school, I was in the drama club. We did some silly plays wearing even sillier costumes. It was fun, and it left me with some cherished memories.
Plus, as a teacher, I had to face a very tough crowd every day comprised of teenagers looking for any weakness in my armor. An improv class that forced me to take some risks and be less serious about my image seemed like a good idea.
